Read and Remember the Forgotten War

The annual Wellesley Veterans' Parade takes place on May 19th during Wellesley's Wonderful Weekend. It will have as its theme the 60th anniversary of the ending of the Korean War, sometimes known as "The Forgotten War".

In keeping with this theme, the main library is preparing a reading list and a display of many titles on the Korean War, featuring fiction and nonfiction books, audiobooks, and DVDs.

To learn more about the Korean War and its 60th anniversary, ask any reference librarian or check out the web page of The Department of Defense 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee.

WFL Staff Pick
for May

Mike G This month's book suggestion comes from Michael Groh, WFL Facilities Supervisor. Michael highly recommends Paul Revere's Ride by David Hackett Fischer. "At one point in the book, the author puts you in the saddle, which enables you to sense the danger and become one with the horse. He also drives home the fact that Revere was not the lone rider that Longfellow's poem describes -- his skill at networking is what really won the day. The Regulars phased out the word "bumpkin" when describing the locals soon after April 19,1775. I love a good ending, and in this book David Hackett Fischer delivers one of the best."

Find What You're Looking for in the Boston Globe

The Reference Department is excited to announce that the Library now has online access to the entire run of the Boston Globe from 1871 to present. This is GREAT! Look up big historical events, the front page on your birthday, Red Sox games, death notices and obituaries, book reviews, Wellesley, storms, and virtually anything else that has ever made its way into the Boston Globe's pages. To get there from the WFL web page, go to Local Links on the right, and click on Proquest Historical Newspapers.

Wellesley Reads Together

As teenagers from a rough part of Newark, New Jersey, Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt, and George Jenkins'  first stroke of luck was testing into University High, one of Newark's three magnet high schools. Their second was finding each other.  When a university recruitment presentation reignited George's childhood dream of becoming a dentist, he convinced his two friends to go to college with him. They would help each other through. None of them would be allowed to drop out and be reabsorbed by the Newark streets. They would go to medical school and would become doctors. The three men chronicle their story in the best-selling book
The Pact, an absorbing inspirational memoir that is our next community read. Watch for related events and book discussions beginning this fall.
